I started late this summer - I am writing an a diary about my late garden here (http://ncnaturalist.com/index.html) The squash was planted in the first week of June, and is already doing better than last year - there was a dearth of pollinators last year for whatever reason. As you can see, they are growing very nicely, with a lot of flowers, and I have seen a lot of pollinators around them - enough so I did not have to manually pollinate them, which was what I was considering. As I water my garden each morning and night, I saw this little fellow hopping around - the motion drew my eye to him (or her), as I would never have seen her other wise. Nature can sneak up on us; always in this modern society most of us take for granted that which should be viewed as a miracle, but so often we get caught up in the day to day life that we forget the true connection we have with the earth. Planting a garden ushers in the miracles that surround us every day - they do not usher them into our lives, for they occur whether we are aware or not, but they do insinuate them into our psyche - into our consciousness. Look closer at your yard, at your trees and your plants and your animals - for they are there, waiting to be discovered. Look upon the clouds and feel the rain, people, and rejoice for now in this world, for it can be a joyful and understanding place sometimes - and understanding nature, and the natural rhythms of things makes me more aware of the joy and miracle of the simple fact of living. Tomorrow is Saturday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday), oddly enough the only day which retains the name of the roman deity - and it is the deity of agriculture. So think to yourself, it is not to late - plant some lettuce, or spinach for baby spinach leaves - if you live in the south the growing season is yet long, but even in the northern climes there is time enough to plant a plant and enjoy the simple fact and miracle which has been given to us, amid times that are in all moments of human history filled with that which is antithetical to miracles - together we shall walk into the future which is more or less of our own choosing! |
