| Crime, Drug Policy, and the Courts Congressman McHenry is vice-chairman of the Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice and Drug Policy. One of his first efforts as a Congressman was to organize a conference with sheriffs and other law enforcement personnel from every county in the Tenth District, along with federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agents and State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) agents to discuss solutions to the increasing methamphetamine problem in the state. The Congressman supports much stiffer penalties for drug dealers and offenders, and better management of federal grants to assist local law enforcement to eradicate this problem. He is cosponsor of three bills that will move toward these goals by countering methamphetamine production and trafficking. The Congressman strongly supports the death penalty, and opposes efforts by activist judges to pursue a left wing agenda that is contrary to the will of the American people. Judges are supposed to interpret law, not create law, but over time they have taken legislative power. To treat them as such, Congressman McHenry supports term-limiting federal judges. |

| The election season is over for the time being, but the problems which must come to grips with our energy policy. This is to important an aspect of our modern life to be left to chance, and for the first time President Bush has tied the Iraq war to the global oil trade. We continue to remain vulnerable on this front, and it is vital in to many areas to ignore it any longer. It will be interesting to see exactly how much both parties back up their words when they speak of getting off oil. Here is one idea for developing the new infrastructure. On a local level, Lincoln County and all of North Carolina continue to grow at a very fast pace. There is a new Walmart opening up at Hwy. 73 , near Hwy. 16, and there is also a Lowes. The other stores in these areas have not been announced; hopefully there will be a good mix. We must be smart in the way we manage our growth - The Meeting Grounds website will be studying the plans that our county managers are drawing up for future development; it is in all our interests to make sure that we grow in a smart way, and not allow sprawl to overtake our community. Many counties across North Carolina are facing the same pressures that Lincoln County is facing, and some have already made mistakes that we can learn from - from ensuring sufficient water supply to making sure that proper roadways are built to properly handle the amount of development taking place. |
